The range of the Amami Rabbit
used to be much larger but over the years they
have died out and can now only be found on two
small islands of Japan. For this reason they have
been listed as endangered. Native villagers of
this island have purposely released many mongooses
to try to ward off poisonous snakes. Unfortunately
these mongooses also eat Amami Rabbits which has
ultimately caused a significant decline in their
numbers.
