During the winter months the Mountain
Hare changes its fur color from a dark brown to
an almost white color. The natural location of
the Mountain Hare conflicts with that of the European
Hare which causes them to compete for land.
Since the European
Hare is considerably larger it usually wins
out.
Over time the Mountain Hare has adapted well
for cold, snowy and mountainous areas. Its paws
have a large surface area which helps it to stay
above the surface of the snow. These characteristics
are consistent with the Arctic
Hare but they are definetively two different
species.
